    Organize Photos and Videos in Sync for DJI

    Our ultimate goal is to help you choose best-looking photos and videos in the fastest way. For this we have adopted the best practice from Lightroom software - we implemented Picked and Rejected Heart flags altogether with Color Labels.

    Color Labels and Heart Flags

    Flags are set for Media items in the Storage or DJI device Tabs. Once media items are organized, you can filter to display and work on photos that you’ve labeled with a particular flag or a particular color label. Also, you can use Quick Tools (such as Download Picked Media or Delete Rejected Media) to streamline your organization workflow.

    Organize Media in the Previewer

    Do the following:

    • In the Storage or DJI device Tab enlarge photo or video;

    • Tap and hold on the Heart icon or the Color Label icon and choose the needed flag or color label;

    • Swipe to the next item and apply new Heart flags and color labels if you wish;

    Organize Media in multi-select mode

    Do the following:

    • Select multiple items in the grid;

    • The bottom panel contains available actions. Tap and hold on the desired action to apply flags or labels all at once;

    Heart Flag states and Color Labels are not saved to file itself. They are not visible or available outside of Sync for DJI.

    Geek fact: Sync for DJI contains database where we store all meta information regarding each ever available media file on your DJI devices(drone and Osmo).

    How to filter the grid with a particular Flag or a Color Label

    Do the following:

    • Open the Filter screen;

    • Choose needed Color Label(s), Heart Flag(s);

    • Tap on Apply;

    • Now the grid displays only filtered photos and videos.

    Also, you can filter by Media type: Video, Panorama, Photo, and so on.

    Note: To reset Filters - open the Filter screen and tap on SHOW ALL in the top right corner.

    How to use Quick Tools

    Do the following:

    • Open Main menu;

    • Choose desired Quick Tool;

    For more information about Quick Tools - please, read this article.

    Quick Tools - Head Start with Picked and Rejected Media

    DJI Mavic Air

    Quick tools are available for everyone. These one-tap actions provide powerful, easy-to-use organization tools along with media edit. Use quick tools to streamline your workflow with connected DJI drone or Osmo. Today, we are going to talk about Delete rejected and Download Picked Media.

    Before you begin

    General information and tips for organizing taken footage with Color Labels and Picked/Rejected Hearts you can read here.

    Update your app to the latest version (2.0.4) to make sure that you're using the latest version of Sync for DJI.

    To ensure that all of your quick tools are available - connect your device to iPhone (or iPad).

    Get started

    To open Quick tools, tap on the menu icon, then choose a needed Quick tool.

    Tap on Menu icon

    Choose Quick tool

    1. Download Picked Media

    This Action allows to download all 'Hearted' (analogy with Picked Flag in Lightroom) media from DJI device. 'Heart' items mean media that you picked during previewing footage.

    How to use:

    1. Open Sync for DJI.

    2. Open Main Menu and choose 'Download Picked Media'.

    3. Download will start immediately.

    Pay attention that this action works only if drone or Osmo is actually connected.

    2. Delete Rejected Media

    This action works for both libraries - Storage and Device. For DJI devices deletion takes some time for each file. That is why this action might streamline your review process - you just do not distract to UI interruptions.

    How to use:

    1. [optional] Review your taken footage and reject media you do not like.

    2. Open Main Menu and choose 'Delete Rejected Media'.

    3. Media files are deleted quietly in the background.

    Pay attention that deletion happens to Storage and connected DJI device.

    Quick Tools: 'Stitch Panorama' and 'Make Timelapse Video' are coming soon.

    How to watermark your photos with Sync for DJI app

    To use custom watermark feature you need to update your app to 2.0.1 version. Open iTunes -> Updates or tap here.

    Watermarked image

    If you're putting photos online on Instagram, Skypixel, etc. and want to protect your rights to those images or sign them, the best way to preserve digital images is by watermarking them.

    With a digital photo, a watermark is a soft logo or word(s) superimposed over the top of the picture. The purpose of placing a watermark on your photos is to limit others from attempting to copy and use the photo without approval.

    If you use a watermark that's too small or faint, someone could easily crop or edit the watermark and take the photo. And, if the watermark is too large or dark, it will dominate the picture, compromising its appearance.

    To place the watermark on your photos, follow these 4 steps.

    1. Find the app to create your watermark. We suggest use:

    A+ Signature. You can add a watermark or an annotation. Available through the AppStore.

    Marksta. You'll have a surprising number of options for customizing your watermark how this app can create watermarks. Available on the AppStore.

    These apps will export png image with transparent background. Save it in Photos app.

    2. Open Sync for DJI app, go to Settings -> Share Settings -> Custom Watermark.

    (use this link if you read this article from iPhone and Sync for DJI is installed)

    Settings -> Share Settings -> Custom Watermark

    Pay attention to only users who use PRO version of Sync for DJI can add custom watermarks to photos.

    3. Tap on Set a New Watermark -> Choose Image and find your image that you just saved from apps above or uploaded to own library manually from other sources.

    You will see how your watermark looks on light and dark backgrounds.

    Set a New Watermark -> Choose Image

    4. Then choose photos or video that you need to watermark and tap on Save to Photos or Share button. Sync for DJI prompts you place watermark to one of four corners. Choose the best place and tap on Save to Photos/Share.

    You only need to watermark media that you will publish in social networks or something like that, where others can easily download them. So don't feel like you have to watermark every photo you have ever shot. Instead, save yourself some time by only picking specific images for watermarking.

    Then publish your photos where you want. All exported images will be watermarked.

    Watermarked photo. Me family on a bridge.

    P.S. For comments and feedback you can find same post on Facebook.

    Tasks screen - Keep track of downloading, processing and sharing

    Brief explanation:

    Tasks panel allows you to see progress in your downloads, time estimation for active actions, and completed requests, such as Save to Camera Roll, Share (so as Stitch Panorama, Create Quickshot video and so on).

    Tasks (items in the queue) are PAUSING whenever you pull the USB cable or turn off DJI drone or Osmo. However, items are automatically resuming once the connection is re-established with the same device and the same micro SD.

    Illustration 1. Tasks Panel in the action

    Let's get deep into Tasks:

    Download and processing of media from DJI device is not ultra-fast. Also, we allow downloading while you are continuing to organize footage or while an app is working in the background. That's why we developed a special panel where you can keep track of all your requests. As soon as you start downloading photos or videos - the app immediately creates the task and places it on this screen.

    You can access panel with the Tasks at any time just pulling Tasks tag, located on the right side of the screen. The tag itself displays current progress and estimation of the remaining tasks.

    Tasks are divided into sections presenting DJI device or devices (if you link multiple). Each section contains device name, connection status, battery level and actual progress with the estimation. Also, you can open a context menu for the section and cancel tasks (or remove completed tasks).

    Note: "Storage" section is used when you perform Share actions for media items already transferred to App Storage.

    Tasks are auto resumable and if you want to finish download later or swap battery, or connect another DJI device - once you establish link again - Tasks will resume from the point they've been stopped (at this point, we hope you are impressed :)). Moreover, they are running even if you minimize Sync for DJI - the app maintains the connection with the drone/Osmo while there are things to download. You'll be guided with push notifications about milestones or changes in the downloading queue. For the best asynchronous results, we use Location service (read more about it here).

    Protip: download multiple media items from DJI device using Multiselect Mode. In this case, selected files will be combined into one task.

    Each task has context actions once it is completed. Use swipe to the left on item row (iOS) or long tap on a row (Android). You can Share to other apps or hide task.

    Note: Successful tasks (if they do not require further action) will be erased from the list after the next launch of an app.

    Estimation of the remaining time:

    Starting with iOS 12.1 - we use prediction algorithms altogether with machine learning to estimate how much time is required for pending Tasks. We also calculate how much battery will be drained. You'll see a warning icon on Tasks tag in case of such a situation. Estimation is unique to each DJI device and mobile device you use for synchronization and requires some time for the calibration.

    iOS 12 - Beta issues

    Updated: Jul 17, 2018

    [For those who as we installed latest Apple's OS this summer]

    The iOS 12 beta is live for developers and the general public via the Beta Software Program. The first three betas deliver a suite of new features and enhancements, but they’re also causing problems for those testing the software ahead of the official release in the fall.

    The fact that iOS 12 beta is causing problems should come as no surprise. This is pre-release software, and the point of the beta is to weed out these problems before the software is released to millions of iPhone and iPad users around the world.

    As developers of Sync for DJI, we observe that one of the declared improvements – better battery and background management – are not smooth now. Moreover, wast of complains around the world are linked with this reform. At the time of writing this article(iOS 12 Beta 2 - mid of July 2018), we experience more often crashes of underneath low-level framework that implements connection with your DJI device. This happens mainly when you often switch between apps in the background. However, when you restart the application – all pending downloads are resuming from the same position automatically, as always in Sync for DJI. Sorry, for the inconvenience it might cause.

    Workaround: Please, do not overuse multitasking in iOS 12 while it's in beta stage.

    As we approach the update’s release in the fall, we expect the beta to become more stable than it is right now and background work of Sync for DJI becomes same or better as on iOS 11.

    [This article is a subject to change later]

    Sync for DJI is using your location services while tasks are in progress

    Updated: Jul 16, 2018

    Illustrative 3D map

    Why iOS restricts app work in the background?

    As we know, iOS is more restricted OS than Android. And when the user is not actively using some app, the system moves it to the background state. For many apps, the background state is just a brief stop on the way to the app being suspended. Suspending apps is a way of improving battery life it also allows the system to devote important system resources to the new foreground app that has drawn the user’s attention.

    I know few apps which work in the background. How they do that?

    In iOS 7 Apple introduces the new feature «Background App Refresh» that allows third-party apps go out and pull new messages, status updates, and more from the Internet or other sources, even while they’re not actively running on the screen.

    When iOS app developers it necessary to keep their apps running in the background, iOS helps do so efficiently and without draining system resources or the user’s battery. It is allowed for apps which use such features as:

    – Background app refresh - takes up very little battery and CPU, and is used primarily by news/weather/social media/mail apps to update your feed so that when you open the app it won't be entirely out of date.

    – Audio, Voice over IP, Bluetooth Communications - for apps like What’s app for calls or for Pebble to deliver notifications on smartwatches even if the main app is in the background

    – Newsstand downloads, remote notifications - any app (like The New York Times app) that needs to display notifications generated outside the app (for example, breaking news notifications), can stay awake in the background to receive such "remote" notifications

    – Location Updates - apps like Facebook, Find Friends, and others use this to update location-related information, though other apps can use it to surreptitiously use it to do tasks in the background (but only if you specifically allow them to access your location).

    Sync for DJI indicates you that the app use Location Service

    So why Sync for DJI uses Location Updates?

    Since the first version of Sync for DJI, we were positioning the app with Background support. But our first customers know that up to v1.2 Sync for DJI was allowed work in the background just up to 3 minutes. We know, such time is not enough to download 4 minutes HD footage. So we were starting looking for other ways to increase this time. From the fourth options above - most stable way to keep app active is using Location service. So we started using it. And since v1.2 Sync for DJI uses your Location Services when you minimize the app. Don’t worry. We don’t save or keep your location info. Sync for DJI just asks the system and open something like a channel for the app to be active even in the background. Afer all tasks are finished Sync for DJI automatically stop using location services and the blue strip above disappears.

    Sync for DJI using your Location services only while you using the app.

    If you still don't allow Sync for DJI use your location services - enable this option immediately from app Main Menu → Settings → Location Service and you will be able to work or use other apps while your beautiful sunsets photos are downloading in the background.

    iOS 12 is coming this fall. What does it bring for Sync for DJI?

    As you maybe already know, Apple yesterday held keynote event WWDC 2018 in San Jose, California.

    Four OS updates. One big day.

    Apple CEO Tim Cook and his senior staff made this a software-focused keynote, with iOS 12, macOS 10.14, watchOS 5 and tvOS 12 announcements. There was no new hardware shown, even though last year's conference gave us a first look at the HomePod, as well as the iPad Pro 12.9 and iPad Pro 10.5.

    iOS 12: More power to you.
    iOS 12: More power to you.

    We, developers of Sync for DJI, are excited to announce that we are adding support for Siri suggestions and RAW photo support.

    Sneak peek of these features from Apple:

    The Siri scenario as simple as following:

    After a flight you can just say "Hey Siri, download my new shots"(*1). And the magic begins – Sync for DJI establishes the connection with your DJI device (*2), finds out what is new since last time and starts to download freshly made media to storage or directly to Photos (depends on default settings). That's it.

    For RAW support:

    We already can download and share RAW photos from DJI devices. Just we expect you to have 3rd party RAW editor application installed to edit all these shots. With iOS 12, Sync for DJI will be able to save directly to Photos application.

    For comments and feedback, you can find the same post on Facebook.

    (*1) You can customize the text to be pronounced to Siri as you want.

    (*2) Yes, iOS should be connected to DJI device with Remote Controller or WiFi.

    DJI News: Ronin-S released!

    Source: here.

    A new product was recently released by the DJI. Ronin-S is a brand new Osmo device which allows you to connect your photo camera to it and use such combo as a fully functional Osmo mechanism.

    Gimbals have revolutionized how we film everything from home videos to blockbusters movies. As someone who typically films everything solo, using a gimbal like the Ronin-M quickly became a burden even though it was a great product. I have personally had my eyes on multiple one handed gimbals for quite some time but many of them couldn't hold the weight I needed or were not a polished product that I wanted to rely on when I'm half way across the world. That all changes today with DJI's release of their first single-handed stabilizer.

    Key Features

    • Cost $699

    • Eight pound payload

    • 12-hour battery time

    • Manfrotto quick-release system

    • Push mode allows you to adjust pan, tilt, and roll axis by hand

    • Sport mode allows you to change the response speed of the gimbal on the fly

    • Joystick adjustable positioning

    • Create automatic camera movements for Panoramas, Time-lapses, Motion, and more

    • Control camera settings remotely through DJI app

    • Accessories add the ability to control focus or work in tandem remotely

    • Modular design allows for compact travel and accessibility to be used with vehicle mounts, jibs, and dual-handle systems

    One of the largest benefits to a single-handed gimbal is the ability to set it down without the need for stand. DJI has gone a step further and added the ability to create time-lapses and motion-lapses using the gimbal. This is a big deal for someone who travels as light as possible, giving them the ability to shoot video with a gimbal and add motion to time-lapses all in one device. Ronin-S is fully compatible with numerous models of cameras, such as Canon, Panasonic, Nikon and Sony . The ability to add and interchange accessories, create motion time-lapses, create on the fly movement profiles, and also having some of the best software support at such a competitive price really pushes the Ronin-S to the forefront of the market.

    Overal Ronin-S will be very handy for people who have a compatible camera and want to widen its horizons using it as a fully functional Osmo device.

    You can preorder today for $699.
